TV Production Research

TV production


In the stages of producing my TV show I researched different types of programs that were similar to my TV show. 

This is the book I found in the library about TV production by Jim

   

On this page I found out how the whole production process works to do with TV production. I then highlighted the process diagram. This shows every step of the process with it being labelled. It then goes in to detail about what's most difficult about the whole process. This is perfect research if you wanting to produce your own TV program.     





On this page I found out how to set goals and objectives to reach while in the process of the TV program. I also tells you about how to test if the audience would like what you produce. Starting with the concept of the TV programme is also in this section showing you how to trigger amazing ideas for programmes.  




This page shows you what people use to watch their programs. They can be watched on small phones and large phones. They use a close up shots to get the facial expression and they do a close up so that the people watching on a small screen can still see how they react to certain bits. During the process they have to take in to consideration of everyone else that is watching whether they would enjoy it and how they can watch it. The more devices you can show the program on the better although it does cost a lot of money for this to happen. This is why they only do this with the TV programmes that are going to be successful or that already are successful.

   
The most important bit of it all is the budget and the limitations of the whole process. The list highlighted on the left hand side is the list that would be used for the budget, taking everything into consideration. The highlighted section on the right is the limitation they have. All the listed thing have to be taken into consideration no matter what kind of production is it.



Here is the budget for the different creative sectors.

I had looked around on the internet to find out what the gap in the market was. I noticed that the main programs shown on the TV and that are popular are Goggle box and Off their Rockers. From these two popular TV shows, I decided to mix them together and produce a program called Pensioners React. I had noticed that The Fine Brothers had produced a channels consisting of different people reacting to videos. They have “Kids React,” “Teens React,” “Adults React” and “Elders React”. Pensioners reacts could get mixed up with Elders React but I wanted to be more specific as elderly people has a range of different ages, from roughly age 50 +.





Employment opportunities and job roles in the creative media sectors

Task 1 
Full time job opportunities in the TV industry would be things such as:
Being a runner
Working with the camera and crewing internship
Sound engineer
Sound operates

Explain the employment opportunities in your chosen creative media sector 
Full time:
Working full time in the TV industry would be a Production Manager, Media receptionist or other important roles the TV production has. A full time employment is employment which a person works a minimum number of hours defined as such by his/her employer. Full time jobs usually come with benefits that are not typically offered to part time, temporary, flexible workers, annual leave, sick leave and health insurance. This is what encourages people to have a full time jobs as they get many benefits out of it.  

Part time:
A part time contract is a form of employment that carries fewer hours per week compared to a full time job. They work in shifts but often remain on call while off duty and during annual leave. They commonly work fewer than 30 or 35 hours per week. The employment for part time job in TV production is there is jobs going in ITV studios. Theres a different selection of jobs going in different departments of TV production.

Freelance:
A freelancer is someone who is self employed and they are there own boss and they work the hours themselves. They also have the freedom to pick what project they want to be associated with. Most people who are freelances use a website called ProductionBase. This is where you can find other people who have produced different things to do with media. As they are there own boss the website itself show the statistics of their own profile to see how well they are doing. This could lead people on to do other things. If a director or producer spots someone on there it could make there business bigger and better or make someone else's better.  

Voluntary:
Its were you don't get paid at all. You volunteer your own time into what you want to volunteer for. Usually people volunteer to get some work experience for the future. This is always handy to have on your CV. If someone was to volunteer to do with media and in something they want to progress on to do, it would help them a lot if this was on their CV.

Casual:
You can get the odd shift here and there if any extra people are needed.You get paid the minimum wage due to your age. Being a runner for the day would mostly be casual work as your not wanted all the time. You might just be called in to do a certain day.

Hourly paid:
You can only get paid hourly. Usually you can get paid for every half an hour that you do depending on how much you are getting paid.

Piecework:
You get paid for the amount you produce. For example a costume designer would only get paid for the amount of how much is produced. The more thats produced the more money they would receive. The less work they do the less money they get.

Work experience:
The best way to start off being in the TV production is doing work experience. Usually starting off being a runner.  

Explain the professional behaviour you would need to display when working in TV production

Reliability:
Reliability when working in a high end TV production team is crucial. Most TV production want someone who are reliable as things may turn out to be unprofessional.

Attendance and Punctuality:
Having excellent attendance and punctuality shows that you are determined and never give up how ever ill you are. Most people employ people who have great attendance as they know they will always be on time and will always be there.

Commitment:
Showing commitment to a business shows that you are determined for the business to do well. You put all your time and effort into it.

Time management:
Shows that you have professionally planned out what your going to be doing with your time.

Contribution to tea projects:
This can sometimes show people what your like being a team leader and how well you can communicate with other team members. This also shows how confident you are around other people.  
Communication skills:
This shows how well you can communicate with other people around you. This can come in handy when you move onto bigger things in the TV production. You must be able to communicate with people around you otherwise it doesn't show confidence which most people like about employing people.

Personal Statement
I am hard working and I never give up in difficult situations. I can successfully work independently or as part of a team and i'm not frightened of making decisions. I tend to be very competitive and when things don't go well i'm determined to put them right. I am interested in the editing part of media and this is something I want to study in University. Hopefully in the future I will become an editor as this is something I am inspired to do.  

Work experience
I have recently been working on a client brief for someone who is new to making his own music. The project name was Omega Ned. We had to produce a CD face, CD cover, T-shirt, logo and symbol. I also made a production log and I evaluated my work from the feedback I got from Omega Ned. It took roughly 10 hours altogether to produce and finish everything.

Understanding the regulation of creative media sector


How are films given a certification?
Films that are going to be used for theatrical release are normally classified by at least two examiners using the published guidelines. If they see a problem with the film it may be seen by other members of the Board to the Chief Executive and Presidential team. Occasionally they will have to take specialist advice about the legal acceptability of film content or its potential for harm.

For DVD's they are normally seen by one Examiner, mostly when they are viewing the DVD version of a cinema film which has already been classified.

 The issues they look for are discrimination, drugs, horror, language, imitable behaviour, nudity, sex, sexual violence, theme and violence when making decisions. The other things they consider context, the tone and impact of a work (eg. how it makes the audience feel)

British board of film classification
The British board of film classification is a non governmental organisation, which is funded by the film industry, that is responsible for the national classification of films within the united kingdom. It has to compulsory classify videos, DVD's and some videos games under the video recordings act 2010. The BBFC theatrically released films, rated videos and video games that forfeited exemption from the Video Recodrings act 1984. This was discovered in August 2009 to be unenforceable until the act is re-enacted by the Video recordings Act 2010. Legally the local authorities have the power to decide under what circumstances films are shown in cinema. Nearly always they choose to follow the advice of the BBFC.
Here are the current ratings:
U - Universal
All ages admitted, there is nothing unsuitable for children over the age of 4
PG - Parental guidance
All ages admitted but certain scenes may be unsuitable for children under 8
12A
This age is only used in cinemas. The film wouldn't be suitable for young people so people who are aged 12 are only admitted if accompanied by an adult, aged at least 18 years old. Films under this category can contain mature themes, discrimination, soft drugs, commonly used milder swear words and moderate violence/sex references.
15
Only those over 15 years are admitted. Younger than 15 cant rent or buy a 15 rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, games or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Usually the films contain adult themes, hard drugs, strong language, moderate strong violence/ sex references and mild non detailed sex activity.
18
Only adults are admitted. Nobody younger than 18 can rent or buy an 18 film. Films in this category do not have limitation on the bad language that is used. Hard drugs are generally allowed and strong/ sex references along with strong sexual activity is also allowed. Scenes of strong real sex may be permitted if justified by the content.
R18 - Restricted 18
Can only be shown at licensed cinema or sold at licensed retailers or sex shops and only to adults, those aged 18 or over. Films under this category have material the BBFC does not allow its 18 rating, violence and sex activity will be stronger in R18 rated VHS, DVDs and films than those rated 18 however, there is still a range of material that is often cut from R18 rating. More cuts are demanded in this category than any other category.

A page on the BBFC is a case studies page. This shows films from A - Z that the BBFC have tried to change. An example of a film is Attack the Block.

Attack the Block    
The BBFC wanted to rate the film as a 12 but under the BBFC guidelines its automatically turned into 15+. Attack the Block uses f**** 50 times within the film and the uses of motherf****** is used. Soft drugs were only used which was marijuana

Cloverfield
BBFC distributer requested it as a 12A but the filmed passed for a 15. It contains strong threat and moderate horror which is considered as a 15.        

OFCOM
As the BBFC look through the guidelines, OFCOM have to monitor radios and TV. They have to monitor what gets broadcasted and making sure they follow the broadcasting codes and Guidance.
They are licensing company allowing people to TV broadcast programme.
Here are the codes and conducts they go along with to make sure nothing inappropriate is getting broadcasted:
Drugs, smoking, solvents and alcohol
Violence and dangerous behaviour
Offensive
Sexual material
Nudity
Exorcism and the paranormal
The involvement of people under eighteen in programmes
OFCOM are responsible for taking down Radio or TV programmes that may cause problems to the public.
For example, a Top Gear episode had to be taking down after two viewers had complained of the word 'slope'. Clarkson saying "That is a proud moment. But there's a slope on it" The two viewers had said it was offensive. After receiving the complaints, the Producer Andy Wilman said it was " a light hearted wordplay joke referencing both the build quality of the bridge and the local Asian Man who was crossing it" After is not being justified, Wilman took into account that viewers overseas might find it offensive. "We were not aware at the time, and it has sub frequently been ought to our attention, that the word 'slope' is considered by some to be offensive and although it might not be widely recognised in the UK, we appreciate that it can be considered offensive to some here and overseas, for example in Australia and the USA" He then went on to mentioning that if he knew at the time they wouldn't of broadcasted it. This episode was scrpited in advanced but during the post production BBC failed to check whether the word had the potential to offend viewers. In the past Clarkson has been done for other offensive things so now Clarkson revealed that he had been given a warning and would be sacked is he made "One more offensive remark, anywhere, at any time."


IPSO
IPSO is a new independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. They uphold the highest standards of journalism by monitoring and maintaining the standards set out in the Editors code of practice and provide support and redress for individuals seeking to complain about breaches of the Code. IPSO is committed to working with the newspaper and magazine industry to maintain and enhance the freedom and authority of the press through effective, independent regulation.
The Editors code consists of:

Privacy
Harassment
Intrusion into grief or stock
Reporting suicide
Children
Children in sex cases
Hospitals
Reporting of crime
Clandestine devices and subterfuge
Victims of sexual assault
Discrimination
Financial journalism
Confidential sources
Witness payments in criminal trials
Payment to criminals

Using these techniques in a newspaper or magazine with higher professional standards that members of the press subscribing to the Independent Press Standards Organisation have undertaken to maintain.  
Three newspapers were reported to the IPSO for running what are claimed to be inaccurate stories about the European Union.

ASA
The ASA is a UK independent regulator of advertising across all medias. ASA stands for Advertising standards Authority. They make sure that all advertising are legal, decent, honest and truthful.
An example of when ASA bans a Ryanair advertisement for being 'sexist'. This ad for budget airline was likely to cause offence after 11,000 people signed the petition. The advertising watchdog had banned the Ryanair newspaper campaign featuring scantily clad flight attendants, ruling that it linked female cabin crew with sexual behavior and should not appeared in national newspapers. The newspaper featured the flight attendants in there underwear with the headline saying "Red hot fares & crew." The ASA received 17 complaints altogether that the ad campaign was sexist. Ryanair defended the campaign saying that the images used were from the charity calendar that the flight attendants agreed to be in, was not sexist and didn't objectified women.      



The main issue of regulation:

Protection of public order and the security of the state.
Maintaining respect for the public.
Respecting human rights of expression and protection from insult and prejudice.
Preventing by the way of harm to children and young people from undesirable content.

Consumers choice refers to the decisions that consumers make with regard to products and services. When we study consumer choice behavior, we examine how consumers decide which products to purchase or consume over time. The factors that influence consumer choice are personal factors, social factors, economic factors, psychological factors and environmental factors.

Communication assignment 1 spelling, punctuation

Introduction
My TV show consists of specifically “Pensioners” watching YouTube video's but
on the TV instead. It would be shown at 10pm, every Friday and would be on Channel
4. Channel 4 is where most of the drama programs are shown. I also think
this is a great time to show as Gogglebox would be shown at 9:00pm and this would
be shown straight away after Gogglebox has finished. The duration of the TV
program would be 30 minutes. 30 minutes would fit roughly 2 maybe 3 videos 
depending how long they all last for. This would be a competition between
Gogglebox and Pensioners React. I wanted to be more specific with the people on the shows as there's already a YouTube channel out there called Elders React. This contains old people from the ages of 50. I thought making a Pensioners version would make it more specific and is from a certain age which is 60. Old people can be a variety of people. It depends what people class as old. The screen will be split into two. One half showing them reacting and the other the video they are watching. Each show will end with a question to the audience, what do you want to see
us react to next week?

Gogglebox

Elders React but I wanted to be more specific as elderly people has a range of

Secondary Research 
Gogglebox gets roughly 5,300 views a week and the least amount of views they have ever got is roughly 4,000 views. For the whole month it was on it got 23,459 views altogether.
Rating on IMDb: 
The IMDb website give Gogglebox an 8/10 on ratings from people rating with their reviews. For a program like that, its done well

On most of their reviews on IMDb they gave 8/10 on ratings. Also most of the reviews were good. Just the occasional one where it says they just think the whole thing is scripted. I then backed this up with a Forum that I found on the internet. Forums for Gogglebox: I thought this would back it up as it’s not a review as such but it shows people’s opinions and what they need to do to maybe make the show better. Another way of showing feedback to maybe the producers and directors of the show. In the forum, this particular forum from this person and said that they aren’t keen on the narrator of Gogglebox. Although Caroline Aherne is in The Royle Family which is a popular TV show that has now ended after all the years it has been on the TV. 
Primary Research:
You get a personal review from the people on Gogglebox and how they think
the show is from their point of view.

A survey was made on Channel 4 website to see what Britain's favourite TV
shows they liked. 

Audience Research: 
Getting different data from this program has helped marketers with their
research for newly added TV shows or gathering ideas together to produce a
new TV show. The cast on Gogglebox give their own opinion on different TV
shows that are already out there and have been given to watch. Their opinions
are really valid when it comes down to marketing. It shows what people like
and dislike from their age, gender, ethnicity, occupation and social class. On
Gogglebox there are a mixture of all these listed so it’s easier for marketers to
set different standards for what they are going to produce next.

Social Media Engagement:
The show have personally have given the cast a Twitter account to interact
with their fans. Even the oldest people on Gogglebox have got Twitter account
and are on their daily with 81,5000 followers. This shows that they have a large
amount of fans supporting them for what they do on the TV by giving them
compliments for what they do or say and laughing about it. Basically
communicating with their fans that they have made while being on the show.
Psychographics:
Maslows hierarchy of needs graph shows the different stages and types of
stereotypical people. This is a great way of showing different ways in which
stereotypical people are put into characterise to show what stage they are at.
For example, people who seek discovery would be classed as the explorers or
people who seek escape would be classed as the strugglers. In Gogglebox there are mixtures of all these which can also make marketing a
little easier. 

Social Class: 
Gogglebox is watched by E, D, C2, C1, B and A. Most people I have asked have
watched Gogglebox and they are at D or E as we are students at college or
have part/full time jobs. It goes all the way up to A as most celebrities have
watched. They even got the chance to go on it themselves for Christmas
special. Celebrities such as James Dornan, Nick Frost, Miranda sings and many
more.


Production research:
They pay the cast roughly £15 a night, which is £107 weekly for them to stay
on the program. Channel 4 doesn’t get public funding. It is funded entirely from its own commercial activities.

Off their rockers
Off their rockers is a TV show that contains elderly people pulling pranks on
people in the street to get a reaction out of them. 
Nearly being 7/10 peoples first opinions weren’t that great. They thought it was all set up even when they
showed at the end the people that were pranked, people still thought it was fake. 
One of elderly women on 'Off their rockers' became that popular, she made her
own Betty Whites 'Off their Rockers' show. 
I think 'Off their Rockers' social class would be E, D, C2, C1 and maybe B. It got 10,940,000 views from all 3 series. Roughly, 3,300 each series.
Production Research:
ITV are funded by advertising and sponsorship.

Elders react
Elders React is a Youtube playlist made by The Fine Brothers. The fine
brothers are sponsored by Ford and Comedy Central. 
Roughly 2,800,000,000 views altogether on their channel. The channel on YouTube has just over 13,500,000 subscribers. They have 5 different channels. They tried to copyright the word “React” and lost a lot of subscribers from this because people weren’t keen on the idea.
On January 26, 2016, The Fine Brothers announced that they would license and
trademark their existing React series and let creators create their own react
series. In particular, The Fine Bros applied to trademark among other terms,
the term "react", which is used in the title of numerous other YouTube videos
unrelated to the Fine Brothers' YouTube channel. The announcement was met
with backlash from their viewers and fellow YouTube content creators, many
of whom believed the Fine Brothers were attempting to prohibit the creation
of reaction videos by people unaffiliated with their channel. In response, the
brothers promised that they will "not be trying to take revenue from other
types of reaction videos, and will not be copyright-striking." However, other
YouTubers have reported multiple copyright related video takedowns. There
have also been claims that another YouTube channel was producing 'SeniorsReact' videos prior to the Fine Brothers 'Elders React' series. The backlash led to
a dramatic drop in subscribers, with upwards of 675,000 accounts collectively
unsubscribing from the React and Fine Bros Entertainment channels in protest

The social class for Elders React are E, D, C2 and C1 at the most. Not many Adults watch these types of videos.
Audience
16 – 18. I would place my target audience this age as the YouTube videos the
Pensioners would be watching would be appropriate for their age. For
example,KSI and the sidemen videos as they are slightly inappropriate for
under 16 but not many people I know in their 20’s watch their videos.
From the research I had done from Gogglebox, Off their Rockers and Elders
React I have found out what people are more into and what social class they
have been placed in. The demographics for each of the TV shows I have
researched seem to be very similar. I think for the TV show, I think I have
produced the social class would be E, D, C2 and maybe C1 or even B.
Leon and June have both made a success out of Gogglebox as they are critical
people and they are also old.
Product Placement
YouTube would be placed in the video to create awareness to other people
that don’t watch YouTube, to go and watch YouTube.
Copyright would also have to be used in this particular TV show as its using
someone else's work and not their own. They would have to get permission
from the people who have made the videos on YouTube whether they can use
the video or not.
Sponsorship
A suitable Sponsorship for the TV show would be Kellogg’s. This TV show would
be filmed anytime of the day and occasionally they would be eating breakfast.
A Kellogg’s is a family cereal brand. They have many different types of cereal.

Market
I decided to show the TV program on Channel 4 as there are many
competitions with BBC 3 and different dramas. Also there is competition with
Gogglebox being on the same channel, which is Channel 4. My TV program
would be shown straight after Gogglebox.

My conclusion for the success of my TV program. I think my TV program would
do alright. I don’t think it would be a huge success as theres a YouTube channel
already like that with footage already containing similar things. That channel
already has over 13 million subscribers but has lost some recently from the
backlash over copyrighting the word react.

Chapter 2: Understanding the ethical and legal considerations when working in the creative media sector

Legal considerations:
Consideration is the concept of legal value in connection with contracts. It is anything of value promised to another when making a contract. It can take the form of money, physical objects, services, promised actions, abstinence from a future action, and much more.



Why is it important for producers to understand the legal considerations when working in the creative sectors? 
There are 3 different types of legal considerations to think about when working in the creative media sector:

Privacy Law:

  • Privacy law is a regulation that protects a persons rights to be left alone
  • People are allowed to lead their lives without public scrutiny
  • The right to privacy
  • The right to be left alone. this comes under harassment and data protection.

Copyright:

  • Intellectual property is something that is unique to you if physically created i.e an idea is not your intellectual property but the words you write are.
  • Copyright is a type of intellectual law that protects your work.
  • By knowing your right and having the right type of protection you can stop people stealing or copying:
Different types of copyright:
  1. The names of your products or brands
  2. Your inventions
  3. The design or look of the products
  4. Things you write, make or produce 

Rogers was a photographer and took a picture of this couple hold the dogs. Koon then used the image to create a model. The original picture was used to greeting cards. The photo that was taken on the left would have had copyright issues on it to stop other people using it. Koons didn't take this in to consideration and made the models out of the picture. He sold several of these structures and made a large amount of profit. Roger then discovered it had been copied and sued Koons for copyright fraud. Koons then responded by claiming fair use of the picture. The outcome was that Koon's defense was rejected under the argument that he could of used more of a generic source, without copying Rogers work. Koon's was forced to pay monetary settlement to Rodgers. 


Libel law:
  • To publish something which is not true or could harm that persons reputation and may bring hate or scorn towards them. 
  • In Libel it must be a statement which claims to be fact and is not clearly identified as an opinion. When that opinion gets around people reputation could be affected and may be affect there life depending on what type of comment was made.





Obscene publications act 1959

The is a law that makes an offence to publish. For those who hear, read or contained in it can take offence to what had been published. For example 'The Human Centipede' would be in breach of the obscene publications. 

The BBFC rejected this film and decided not to supply it anywhere in the UK. The first film was a mad doctor who kidnapped three people and decided to sew them together. They then decided to make a second film out of it but with a man that was obsessed with 'The Human Centipede'. He had the first film recordings who wants to put the centipede into practice. Unlike the first film the sequel contains images of sexual violence, forced deification, torture and mutilation. Official secrets act 1989

It is illegal to disclosure confidential information regarding national security. For example if a newspaper published a story about the short comings of England's latest warship. This could then threaten the country and therefore endanger national security. 
An example of this would be when Metropolitan police are seeking a court order to make Guardian reporters disclose their confidential sources about the phone hacking. This was under the official secrets act 1989   

Why its important for producers to understand Ethical considerations when working in creative sector

Ethical considerations:
Ethics is what morals someone has to something. Moral conduct. Rules of conducts, responsibility (not the law). If you break an ethical code you may be forced to the ethical disprove from your peers or professional.

Media Ethics
Media ethics is the subdivision of applied ethics dealing with the specific ethical principles and media, including broadcast media, film, theatre, the arts, print media and the internet.

Digital Ethics
Digital Ethics is the study of how to manage oneself ethically, professionally and in a clinically sound manner via online and digital mediums. Every psychologist who uses the Internet or a cell phone (which amounts to nearly all of us) must look at issues

Adhering to the professional body codes of practice

Here are a few example of someone that goes against peoples ethics:
  • Russell Brand was going against the Ethics as he was calling about Sachs daughter, things that were inappropriate to talk about. He used words such as "Slut" and Brand also revealed her name on air, also just in general being a bit harsh. The whole production team were shocked to what they came out with 

    Offensive Language 

    Offensive language is used in the voice message. He uses "Slut" in the voice message which is offensive. Children may have been listening to the broadcast which could be a bad influence.

        Privacy 

        They mentioned the girls name and Russell Brand didn't want to let people know what her name          is.
  • Frankie Boyle and Katie Price. Frankie Boyle had made jokes referring to Katie Prices son Harvey. He had used inappropriate language towards Harvey. He mentioned this on a Comic Relief give it up gig. He said "Apparently Jordan ad Peter Andre are fighting each other over custody of Harvey, well eventually one of them'll lose and have to keep him. I have a theory that Jordan married a cage fighter cause she needed someone strong enough to stop Harvey from f***ing her."
      Offensive Language 
The offensive language used in this is the subject of f***ing her with the cage fighter stopping him. This was also mentioned at a charity event. Although he has a reason to make comedian jokes but he went to far and Katie was offended with the remarks towards her son.                                                      
  • James Franco 
He was harassing the girl by asking her question after question. 
  1. Offensive Language

  3. Could be for a little publicity, as he was bringing out a film at the time
  4. Its a bit creepy that fact of the age difference and he's messaging like that. One message after another. Could come across as obsessive.

Social issues and sensitives

This includes representation of gender, representation of religious beliefs, accessibility etc...
Producers have to be careful with this kind of ethical point of view. This is what people are referred to such as their race, gender, gay prejudice. For example if you showed something to do with homosexuals it could offend gay people. This is something you don't want to come across as it can be a sensitive subject to some people.

Here below is a show that used to be on the TV all the time and most people know what TV show it is. The things they say in TV show is a little inappropriate which could offend some viewers. I don't think this is shown any longer on TV due to the fact it could still offend people.







Offcom

They regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms and mobiles, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. They try to make sure that they get the best from the communications services in the UK.

BBFC

The British Board of Film Classification is responsible for making sure that the content that is shown on a film, TV programme, adverts and video games. It is also responsible for the age classifications that are set for the right films. They look at the things such as discrimination, sex, drugs, horror, theme, violence, nudity and language when looking at what should and shouldn’t be shown.

This assignment is about finding out the different structure and ownerships in the media sector.

Television

Television in the media industry has lots of competition that have employed over 50,000 people. I know this as I looked it up on Wiki. Television broadcasts many different types of TV programmes and films. In the UK, TV is dominated by a few broadcasters. The broadcasters are:
  • BBC - Public Company (A company that has sold a portion of itself to the public), funded by the TV license. (The TV license is paid by the public weekly, monthly or annually) 

  • ITV - Private Company (Usually owned by the founder), 60% owned by ITV PLC (Public limited company), also owned by STV Group PLC (Scotland) and UTV (Northern Ireland)

  • Channel 4 - Private Company, funded by advertising.

  • Channel 5 - Private Company, Owned by the Northern & Shell (Which is owned by Richard Desmond)

      1. An advantage of a Private Company is that they don't have to answer to stakeholders. They also don't have to pay tax. The disadvantage is that they cant use the public capital (which is money that is needed to produce goods or services) and must then turn to a private funding. This would make the cost of the capital more and may limit their expansion of the company.



      2. Advantages of a Public Company is that they are allowed to change the financial markets by selling stock for cash. They would use this money to expand or produce new projects for the company to maybe lead off to something else to make more money and for the business to maybe succeed in something else leading it to have a good reputation.
   
      3. Public Limited Company is a company whose securities are traded on a stock exchange and can be bought by anyone. A Public Company are required by law to publish their complete and financial position so that investors can determine how much the company is worth of it stock.


Radio

Radio is one of the oldest forms of media. Radio transmits sound-based media to car radios and TV. As radios have been around for a long time it is dying out. This is because you can now listen to it on the TV and online as it has become digital. Most people only listen to the radio when they are in their cars. Example of different section of radios:
  • BBC Radio 1 - Publicly funded Radio, Taxpayer funded

  • Metro Radio - Commercial Radio, Advert funded

  • Hospital Radio Hillingdon - National Lottery funded, 24 hour broadcasting. Hospital Radio - Community and Voluntary Radio.  

TFM radio is a commercial radio station that's only played in the North East. Bauer Radio are the owners of TFM radios.  TFM radio makes its money by their advertising and they also make their money by selling things on their website. They get people to buy a deal, which is a voucher they than receiver via email or SMS. They get this off their website that they can then use for family day out or food and drink, going out for a meal. They them ask you to share with other people so then it gets passed around and more people will know. Possibly other people will get involved and they would earn more money.     




Film
In film its not so much having competition, its more like how well known it is. Also the film industry is one of the largest and profitable sectors in the media industry. For example 20th Century FOX is a well known production team. Also Walt Disney, Lucasfilm, DreamWorks, Blue Sky studio, Universal studios, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros Marvel studios. These are some of the more popular Film productions around. The multimillion pound companies tend to produce the big blockbuster films as they have bigger budgets to produce and market the films. If one of the film production companies bought a new film out, you would know pretty much what the film would be like.
  • Smaller film companies such as Pinewood Studios (a small British film company). Films produced by the small studios tend to be cult-films (Unpopular with the audience and often ironically can be enjoyed). Often these films can become successful, popular films.

  •  Walt Disney employs 62,000 people, which makes it the largest singe site employer in the country. I know this as it mentions this on Wiki.  
  •   In 2011 Walt Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion. This also includes the Star Wars franchise. 
  • They have a horizontal integration as they have bought into something that they already specialize in. They both do things that are related to movies. As they already have experience in this business there shouldn't be any problems.   
  • Advantages is that there is reduced costs for big companies as they have more purchasing power and produce products at a reduced costs. Another advantage of cross media ownership is that they have a wider distribution as the markets bigger into which the media text can be distributed are increased - bigger audience = bigger profit.
  •  A disadvantages is branding as media text becomes part of a brand and they have the possibility of losing their individual status. The longstanding partnership with Hearst Corporation, which owns additional TV stations, newspaper, magazine, magazine and stakes in several Disney television ventures. Disney channel, a&e and Lifetime, approx. 30 radio stations, music, video games and book publishing companies. 

Pinewood studios (Multinational)

Pinewood Studios is a multinational  film studio and television studio company. 
Pinewood studios is well known for James Bond, Superman and Star wars Trilogy. The studios is where they filmed James Bond, "The spy who loved me."


Unique Services:

They have an underwater tank that they can film in. This is unique to their company. 800,000 gallon exterior tank.

Exhibition
Universal studios made a film Jurassic world. As Jurassic park is produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, he is also the founder of one of the private companies are Amblin Entertainment. Another production company involved with is Legendary Entertainment. It took a decade for Jurassic world to come out of development. This was because of script rewrites which was in 2005. This then got pushed to 2014 but didn't get released until 2015. The Pre production of the film.
The creative side of the film got passed round a couple of time. It went to Joe Johnson. He didn't want to be the director for the film so instead he directed Captain America.The financing for the film was with the budget $150 million dollars. The posters, trailers and the press would of earn't some money for the film production as most people would of been a fan when Jurassic Park came out in 1993. The box office costing $652,270,625. The opening weekend was $208,806,270.

Animation

These media sector all rely on animation:
  • TV (CBBC) CBBC make their money by the BBC. 
  • Film (Disney)
  • Video Games (Bioware) Subidiary to Electronic arts. 
  • Interactive Media (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Adverts 
  • Marketing


TV, adverts and film use animation as a technique for producing shows, advert and films. They also use animation as a special effect. Video games are based on animation that create a virtual world for players to play about in.
The main animation companies are:
  • DreamWorks (Owned by Paramount)
  • Pixar (Owned by Disney)
  • Aardman (Smaller based company that also have much success)

Interactive media are websites that you can interact on such as:

Facebook and YouTube are the most popular. As interactive media is becoming an everyday thing with people, it seems to be growing considerably. This is why it employs over 34,00 people with companies worth billions of pounds. People communicate through Facebook and Twitter and now that YouTube is now accessible on smartphones these interactive medias are popular than ever. On an online survey it added that 67% of people go on social networking sites for staying in touch with current friends. At the bottom of the list with 3%, is people finding potential romantic or dating partners.



Computer games

In recent years gaming has become a popular thing. People using Twitch playing recent selling games online so the people watching can comment or like. They also use webcam on this app which records the game, their faces and their voices so its a live showing of the game being played by that person. There are also YouTubers making gaming channels to a show them playing the online or new selling games. On this channel they would make walk-through that would last roughly 30 minutes each episode. You can make money on both being streaming their content they've made.

  • Sony (Conglomerate): In 2015 they have 131,700 employees.
  1. An advantage of a Conglomerate company is that if the company has excess cash but have no way of growth in the same industry; a company outside the industry is better off with that money as they would benefit with it, whereas the company with the excess cash would just be keeping the cash for no reason. Another advantages of conglomerates is that it can increase the customers as the other companies can cross sell its products to the new customers which could lead to an increase in sales of it main products leading to higher profits for the company. 
  2. Disadvantages of a Conglomerate company is that merging to a company is that the company wouldn't have any experience about that industry it is in. There could be chances of mismanagement and overpricing that target company. Another disadvantages is that the company shifting its focus from its core business which could turn results from the companies performing poorly in areas. This usually happens when you shift your focus to the strong business and your also venturing into that business that you do not have any experience in.     
  • Capcom (Public): In 2014 they have 2,601 employees. Their revenue in 2014 was $239.6 billion. Capcom doesn't have any subsidiaries but there is disadvantages to that. 

  1. Having subsidiaries will help to reduce production costs. Capcom won't have any help from that as they don't have any.
Advantages:
  1. It wouldn't be that expensive as they wouldn't have to pay high taxes.

Publishing

Publishing is producing and distributing text-based media.
  • Newspaper (The Sun) They make their money by promotion and people buying their products
  •  Magazines (OK) OK magazine make their money by promotion and people buying their magazine. They also have product placement with Channel 5 as Channel 5 want to integrate with media brands.   
  • Online Journals (Sage) By the amount of views and advertising they would receive the money from that.
  • Books (Random house) Random house are a well known brand of book publishers. They mostly do children books which are popular. They get their money by selling the books and the people want they to publish their books. As they are well known they would be more reliable.
  • Photos
  • Posters (Advert/Marketing) Adverts are shown during the breaks of TV programs. They are also shown in magazine and newspapers. Having great adverting will make the business more successful and the money they use on advertising would be worth it. They make the money by the channels playing there advert.

Co & Bear Productions is a British Limited company based in London. They are a book publisher who publish kids books mostly. For example The littlest Bear.


Press

A way of delivering news to the general public. This includes both broadcasted news. Radio and TV or printed news (Newspaper and Magazine). Press reports are written by journalists for different news companies:

  • BBC News BBC make their money by TV licenses. It doesn't take money from shareholders. They also sell their programs to other broadcasters.

Photo-Imaging

This sector employs 43,100 people in the UK. The employers would use the Adobe systems as they have the best tools and the best quality results at the end. Two thirds are self employed free lance people who just want to earn a bit more money for themselves.
An example of photo imaging is Instagram. They are a private sector company and are under the development and ownership of Facebook.
Although Adobe is the biggest company in the sector and owns many products such as Photoshop, illustrator and many other products. They are the best used products on the market and that's why most people use them the most. Plus it is the most trusted brand.

Advertising

Advertising is a way of persuading or advising people about a product or service. There is also public service adverts which advertise useful information usually about health.
Different places you can find advertise:

  • Billboards/Posters or on the side of buildings.
  • Newspapers/Magazines
  • Online
  • TV

Marketing 

Marketing is a way of communicating with potential customers about the value of a product or service. In marketing there are 4 P's they use as it ends with a good result. Its also covers most of basics of the product or services.

In the gaming industry these days they like to bring out the old games either by remaking them or just making it playable on that particular device. Ever since this has been happening they gaming industry has been growing incredibly.
Now they are integrating games into phones such as angry birds and flappy birds. You can now get them out the store app off your phone to play on your mobile on the move. You can also play the games on Facebook and can invite friends on them now to play along with encourages more people to play. This has been marketed correctly by thinking of the possibilities with the different options they come up with. Clever that you can now access it through Facebook so you can keep track on what's happening.
